Community Access Television CAT-TV

Why is Community Access Television (CAT-TV) important to the African American Community? CAT-TV came about to give voice to the voiceless, where opinions and points of view out of the mainstream could be aired. CAT-TV was an opportunity for the People of Color to share information with their neighbors and friends. This was why CAT-TV was created. The following North Carolina cities have CAT-TV Stations; Chapel Hill, Charlotte (two Stations), Greensboro and Raleigh. All these cities have large populations of African Americans.

Why did CAT-TV go away? Was it because of lack of money or funding? Not in my opinion. It went away because the Powers That Be were being challenged. Sure, there were some very powerful personalities on CAT-TV, but remember, this country was founded and we still celebrate today, very powerful and outspoken people, we called them the Founding Fathers. CAT-TV was making the Minority Community aware of how Public Policy and Elected Officials could be held accountable and what actions needed to be taken to make Winston-Salem/Forsyth County for the people and by the people.

Looking at local media, both the Winston-Salem Journal and WSJS Radio Station should be made to register as auxiliaries of the National Republican Party. The CHRONICLE, (Black Owned Weekly Papers) is a business and must be aware that the same Powers That Be that removed CAT-TV could also remove their advertisements, which is the life’s blood of any newspaper. The Powers That Be could not threaten the CAT-TV Subscribers became, CAT-TV did not have to make a profit. CAT-TV is funded through Time Warner Cable’s monthly cable charges. This money is already being collected or a small monthly increase in local cable charges should be used to establish an independent CAT-TV Stations for the City/County. CAT-TV was becoming to popular in the African American Community, you know, it no longer knew its proper place, so it had to go. These same Powers That Be have promised to restore CAT-TV in some other form, if you believe that, I am sure you received your Forty Acres and a Mule. When the Powers That Be no longer want to hear from the people they supposedly represents and eliminate or control the people’s right to voice and express their opinions and concerns, we have lost more than just CAT-TV.
